Ijaw National Congress Europe

Otherwise known as INC Europe, it is a very important chapter of the Ijaw National Congress Worldwide. INC Europe is the umbrella organisation for all Ijaw organisations and Ijaws living anywhere within the European continent. It is also an Ijaw representative body which has amongst its listed goals, the full realisation of the desires and aspirations of Ijaws within the European continent, Ijaws within Nigeria and Ijaws worldwide. Ijaws also known by the subgroups "Ijo" or "Izon", are a collection of peoples indigenous to the forest regions of the Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Ondo and Rivers State, all within the Niger Delta in Nigeria. Many of us are also found as migrant fishermen in camps as far west as Sierra Leone and as far east as Gabon along the West African coastline.

We are believed to be some of the earliest inhabitants of Southern Nigeria. Numbered over 10 million, we have long lived in locations near many sea trade routes with our largest concentration in Bayelsa state, Nigeria, which is purely an Ijaw state. Ijaws form the fourth largest tribe in terms of population in Nigeria and Ijaw land in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria accounts for more than 75 percent of the oil produced in Nigeria. Our trade connections with other communities go back as early as the 15th century.
